What is the best program to use to learn C++?

Next year i start a Uni course that is solely dedicated to training game designers. As such in the next few months i really wanna learn. C++ i need to no what the best program is to use as a compiler. At present i have Visual C++ 2008 Express edition but i've been advised against it and quite frankly im having trouble finding tutorials. Please Advise.
