Freedom of Information Act - Not when it might make things difficult for the Local Council?
When people fail to comply with town planning laws, a council has the power to take what is known as enforcement action. Most victims are normal householders or small businesses who get into trouble out of genuine ignorance of the rules through no fault of their own. Enforcement is extremely complex and not something that the lay person can normally deal with and can in the extreme result in criminal proceedings being taken against the offender. There are very few private specialist consultants in this field so help is not readily available. I am such a specialist and wanted to offer my services to those finding themselves being pursued by the council. I therefore asked for a weekly disclosure of all the addresses which had been reported for breaches of planning control (in the same way as you can readily get a list of planning applications submitted). "Not in the public interest" they said. So I cannot let people know that help is available if they need it. Any other similar examples?
