How do I recover files from a HDD that is no longer recognized by any OS when it was working just earlier?

I've checked the drive out on my old and new installation of XP and it no longer recognizable by either one. I know that i successfully copie dall of my files to the new 400GB hard drive, but nothing can read it anymore and it wants to reformat the hard drive. What can I do to recover those much needed files?
