I just got a blackberry bold 9000, i have a quick question?

i dont have the internet plan on my bberry and i just want to use wifi. i think i figured it out but i'm not sure. what i did is i went into browser and went to options then i switched the default browser to hotspot. when i go on the internet it shows wifi symbol in the corner and not 3g and bars. so did i do this right??? please answer i dont want to find a huge internet bill lol
