Would you let a shadetree mechanic work on your car if he could save you much money over "shop labor hours"?

It's a 1984 car. How technical can it get. That car doesn't even have a computer. If this car has sentimental value, then take it to the shop. If not, save some money. I'm a shade tree mechanic and some people even trust me with their new cars. Imagine that.
