What new evidence?

Before the 16th century, the perpetual virginity of Mary was a universal Christian belief. What evidence to the contrary was uncovered *IN THE 16TH CENTURY* that caused some to doubt this belief? (PLEASE do not post Bible quotes. The Bible had been in existence for well over a millennium at that point.)
